Csárdás from the opera Ritter Pásmán
The opera Ritter Pásmán premiered at the Vienna Hofburg in 1892. Its libretto, written by L. Dotch, is based on a story by the Hungarian writer J. Arany.
The Csárdás concludes the ballet sequence in Act III. Regarded as a highlight of the opera, it has also been performed frequently at the Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert. The slow, melancholy Lassan is followed by the rapid Friska. This contrast is characteristic of Roma music.
