Coppelia ballet
Synopsis
Act 1: On the balcony of the house of Coppelius, a rural Polish doll maker, sits Coppelia, a doll he created, reading a book. The villagers believe her to be a real girl. Swanilda, a bright and cheerful girl, feels that her lover Franz is captivated by Coppelia, and becomes jealous, leading to a fight. One day, Swanilda sees Coppelius drop his key, and out of curiosity, she sneaks in with her friends.
Act 2: Coppelius' House Swanilda discovers dolls in the house and realizes that Coppelia is also a doll. Coppelius returns and notices her, and her friends flee, but Swanilda hides. Franz then sneaks in and is captured by Coppelius. He kills Franz and tries to convince Coppelia, but Swanilda impersonates Coppelia, causing a commotion. Franz wakes up and makes up with Swanilda.
Act 3: Village Festival and Wedding Franz and Swanilda are married and celebrated by the whole village. Coppelius, who was angry at first, eventually forgives them and joins in the celebration. One after another, festival dances are performed, and the whole village ends with a spectacular gallop.
This version for clarinet octet is composed of several pieces selected from Act 3.
The original key of "Peace" is G major, but it has been transposed to A-flat major, a semitone higher.
The first clarinet has an E♭ clarinet option (can be played on either B♭ or E♭), basset horn scores can also be played on alto or B♭ clarinet, and contrabass clarinet scores can also be played on contraalto clarinet or contrabass.
